I began my career as a Research Associate at the Salk Institute in San Diego. I quickly gained the respect of my PI (Principal Investigator) and he made me the lab manager within my first year of employment. I then moved to USC where I set up a new lab from scratch and managed it as well. I was a physiologist by training and education, but the new lab was a stem cell/molecular biology research lab, so I was trained in this specialty as well. I moved to Genentech next, where I became the Senior Research Associate of stem cell/knockout technology. When I moved to Deltagen as a founding member, I brought my stem cell expertise to a new level of "high through put". I set up the cell culture lab and trained over 20 people to work with mouse embryonic stem cells. We created over 1000 knockouts. As the company grew my role moved from the lab as a Scientist to the position of Director of Cell Biology overseeing 25+ people working in 5 different departments (cell culture, FACs analysis, IVF, Microinjection and Embryo Cryopresservation) with an annual budget of $4 million.
