I have been employed in the fields of biological chemistry and/or mathematics education ever since I was in college, ie, since 1980. I started out as a tutor of Math, Chemistry, and Spanish at West Los Angeles College. I moved into the field of biochemical work in 1984 doing research on phytoalexins at UCLA, then did two years of graduate research on the molecular biology bacillus subtilis sporulation at CSULA, myocardial infarction mechanisms at UA. My first main nonacademic position was with Selectide (1992-94) screening small peptide sequences for reactivity with certain human bioreceptors. Since then, I've been teaching math and occasionally chemistry for 10 years and working in an academic science lab as a specialist for seven years.
